100 grams of rice in cups
Rice hides a second cup that no calculator prints. 100 grams of uncooked rice is about 0.54 of a US cup, but the cup that ships in a rice-cooker box is a go: 180 ml holding 150 g. By that cup, 100 g is 0.67.
Which cup do you mean?
Ask for rice in cups and the answer forks. A US cup holds 185 g of raw white rice, so 100 g is 0.54 of one. The cup that comes with every rice cooker is smaller, a Japanese go of 180 ml, and it holds 150 g, so 100 g is 0.67 of a go. The cooker's own lines count in go, not US cups, which is the commonest way a pot of rice comes out wrong.
| Which cup | In cups |
|---|---|
| US cup, 185 g | 0.54 |
| Rice-cooker go, 150 g | 0.67 |
The go is measured, not scaled
The go is not a US cup shrunk by arithmetic. A 180 ml volume of rice at the US density would weigh 141 g, but the Japanese tables weigh the go at 150, because short-grain japonica packs the cup fuller than long-grain. Our converter reads the measured 150, not the 141 the ratio predicts. The rice master page carries the go with its mochi and no-rinse variants.
Other rice weights in cups
US cups, for the weights a recipe tends to name:
| Rice | US cups |
|---|---|
| 50 g | 0.27 cups |
| 100 g | 0.54 cups |
| 150 g | 0.81 cups |
| 200 g | 1.1 cups |
| 250 g | 1.4 cups |
The same 100 grams is 0.42 of a cup of water and 0.47 of a packed cup of brown sugar, both heavier than rice. Double it and 200 grams of rice is a cup and a spill.
Questions about 100 grams of rice
- Is 100 grams of rice half a cup?
- About. 100 g of raw rice is 0.54 of a US cup, and a level half cup weighs about 92.5 g. In a rice-cooker go it is 0.67.
- How many cups is 100 grams of uncooked rice?
- About 0.54 of a US cup, on the USDA's 185 g cup. If you mean the go that ships with a rice cooker, 150 g, 100 g is 0.67 of one.
- Is a rice-cooker cup the same as a US cup?
- No. A rice-cooker cup is a go, 180 ml holding 150 g of rice, smaller than a US cup's 185 g. The lines inside the cooker count in go, so match the cup to the pot.
